How a Dental Cleaning Works, Step by Step

1. Dental Exam

Every cleaning starts with a quick exam. A hygienist or dentist checks your teeth and gums for early signs of trouble — cavities, inflammation, or anything that looks different from your last visit. This part takes just a few minutes and shouldn’t cause any discomfort.

At least once a year, we’ll also take digital X-rays. These let us catch problems developing below the gumline or between teeth — issues a visual exam alone can’t detect.

2. Plaque and Tartar Removal

Next, using a dental scaler and other specialized tools, your hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth. Plaque is the soft, sticky bacterial film that forms daily on tooth surfaces; if it isn’t brushed and flossed away, it hardens into tartar, which only a dental professional can remove. You may notice some mild sensitivity here, especially along the gumline, but it shouldn’t hurt.

3. Teeth Cleaning and Polishing

Once tartar is cleared, we clean and polish your teeth with a gritty prophylaxis paste and a rotating brush. This step buffs out surface stains from coffee, tea, or wine and leaves your teeth noticeably smoother and brighter.

4. Flossing

5. Fluoride Treatment

Depending on your individual risk for decay, Dr. Larson may recommend a fluoride treatment to finish the visit. Fluoride helps remineralize weakened enamel and makes teeth more resistant to future decay. It’s applied as a gel, foam, or varnish, left on for a few minutes, then rinsed.
