Chlorinated pool water has a pH level, and when that pH drifts out of balance, it can quietly wear away at enamel over the course of a swim season. I see this pattern almost every summer in patients who swim regularly, and it’s usually an easy fix once we catch it early.

The Science Behind Pool Water and Tooth Enamel
Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, but it has one significant weakness: acid. The recommended pH range for swimming pools is 7.2 to 7.8. When pH drops below 7.0, the water turns acidic — and that happens more often than most pool owners realize, especially during heavy use or after a hard summer rain. Acidic water pulls minerals out of enamel through a process called demineralization.
In my experience, this isn’t something the occasional weekend swimmer needs to worry about. It’s the competitive swimmers, the water aerobics regulars, and anyone logging two or more hours a day in the pool over a season where I actually start to see measurable enamel changes at a cleaning.
Swimmer’s Calculus: The Staining Problem Most Swimmers Don’t Know About
Beyond enamel erosion, frequent swimmers can develop something called swimmer’s calculus — a fast-forming tartar buildup that shows up as brown or dark yellow staining, usually on the front teeth. It’s different from a typical coffee or wine stain that sits on top of the enamel. Swimmer’s calculus forms when pool chemicals react with proteins in saliva, causing them to harden onto the tooth surface much faster than ordinary tartar does.
This is actually one of the tells I look for at a cleaning. If I see that specific pattern of staining on the upper and lower front teeth, one of my first questions is whether you’ve been swimming a lot — and more often than not, that’s exactly what’s going on. Regular cleanings can keep it under control, but if you’re in the pool daily, it can build up faster than a twice-a-year visit can manage.
Signs That Pool Water May Be Affecting Your Teeth
Some of these overlap with other dental issues, which is exactly why it’s worth mentioning your swimming habits at your next visit rather than assuming it’s something else. Watch for:
- Increased sensitivity to cold, heat, or sweets — often an early sign of thinning enamel
- A rough or chalky feel on the tooth surface, especially the front teeth
- New brown or yellowish staining on the front teeth that showed up this swim season
- Teeth that look slightly more transparent at the edges, a hallmark of enamel erosion
- A dry mouth after swimming, which reduces saliva’s natural protective effect
Who Is Most at Risk?
- Competitive swimmers training for extended periods daily
- Children and teens, whose still-developing enamel may be more vulnerable
- Water aerobics participants with long, frequent sessions
- Anyone with existing enamel erosion, dry mouth, or acid reflux
- Private pool owners who aren’t testing and adjusting pH as often as commercial pools are required to
What You Can Do to Protect Your Teeth This Summer
You don’t have to choose between your swim routine and your smile. A few habit changes go a long way:
Keep Your Mouth Closed in the Water
The less pool water touching your teeth, the better — especially when your face is submerged repeatedly during laps. Simple, but it makes a real difference.
Rinse With Water Immediately After Swimming
A quick rinse with clean tap water as soon as you’re out of the pool dilutes and clears chlorinated water off your teeth before it keeps working on your enamel. Make it a habit every time.
Wait 30 Minutes Before Brushing
Right after swimming, enamel is temporarily softened by acid exposure, and brushing immediately can actually accelerate wear. Rinse, wait at least 30 minutes, then brush with a fluoride toothpaste.
Use a Fluoride Toothpaste — and Ask About a Fluoride Rinse
Fluoride helps remineralize enamel. If you’re swimming frequently, I may recommend a prescription-strength fluoride product or a daily rinse for extra protection through the season.
Stay Well Hydrated
Swimming is dehydrating, and a dry mouth means less saliva — your mouth’s first line of defense against acid. Drink water before, during, and after your swim.
Test Your Pool’s pH Regularly
If you own a pool, a reliable pH testing kit is worth the investment. Check at least twice a week during peak use and keep levels in the 7.2–7.8 range — it protects your teeth and your pool equipment.
Schedule More Frequent Dental Cleanings
If you swim competitively or daily, a mid-season cleaning in addition to your regular twice-yearly visits lets us catch early enamel erosion or swimmer’s calculus before it becomes a bigger issue.
What About Saltwater Pools?
Saltwater pools are often marketed as gentler than traditional chlorinated pools, and they do tend to feel softer on the skin. But saltwater pools still use chlorine — they generate it on-site through electrolysis instead of adding it directly. The pH dynamics end up about the same, and the dental risks for heavy swimmers are comparable. Switching to a saltwater pool isn’t a fix on its own; the same protective habits still apply.
